Spreading the word about Music Therapy

October 23, 2013 – Presented “Expressive Therapies Overview; Introduction to Music Therapy” at of Midwestern University in Downers Grove to the student clubs for Pharmacy, Medical School, and PsyD programs. It was a great group of students with great questions and insights from their own experiences as consumers of the arts. Our futures are looking good in their hands!
June 28, 2013 – Served as a advocate and educator to the public on behalf of the Illinois Association for Music Therapy. Several people were interested in learning about music therapy, and many came by to test out the drums. Sometimes referrals come from recommendations from other industry professionals, so spreading the word with others is a good thing!
April 10, 2013 – Provided an all day workshop on “Expressive Therapies for Disease Specific Care”along with dance/movement therapy, art therapy, and drama therapy colleagues. Lead a drum circle for the 40+ participants, and provided a lecture and experiential workshop, “Finding Your Voice – Music Therapy for Non-Suicidal Self Injurious Behaviors”. CEUs and CPDUs were earned by participants. It was a great day of information sharing and learning for everyone involved.
March 23, 2013 – The Indiana Theater In Our Schools mini-conference brings together K-12 teachers, university professors and students, theatre educators, and practitioners from across Indiana to participate in a one-day conference. The conference provides a space for participants to explore how theatre may be used within their professions and curriculum. The playback theater ensemble All Things Story invites audience members to share stories surrounding the theme, “Fostering a Culture of Creativity” as it applies to professional practice, and is serving as the keynote for the conference. March 12, 2013 – Guest facilitator for the “Parent Support Group” for District 97 in Oak Park. Another incredible evening of drumming with moms of kids receiving special education services in the District. Music Therapy rocked us all that night!
January 25, 2013 – Guest lecturer for the “Introduction to Creative Arts Therapies” course at Columbia College. Thank you to the Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling Department for the invitation to educate students on the benefits of music therapy.
January 13, 2013 – Oak Park area chapter of the Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity – “Using Music as an Agent of Change”. What a delightful afternoon of sharing insights from the world of music therapy.
January 11, 2013 – Featured guest on Janice Lindstrom’s “The Music Therapy Show. (See blogpost for link to the show.) Thanks to all who listened!
November 3, 2012 – Illinois Psychological Association conference – “The Importance of Professional Self-Care: Movement, Music, and Hypnosis.” Experiential opportunities for self care were provided. Presenters were (left to right) Victoria Storm, Dr. Cliff Saper, Irene Cauwels, Dr. Ellen Stone, and Linda Cao-Baker. Thanks to all who came out and shared their time with us at conference.
October 12, 2012 – American Music Therapy Association conference – “Telling Your Story– Playback Theater for Clinical Insight”. We warmed up our audience of music therapists and students and played back their stories. What a great group of professionals!
October 6, 2012 – A Women’s Wellness Day – Refresh Mind, Body, and Spirit – “Living in Song – Music for Life”. The ladies had a great time exploring singing together and drumming for wellness. Other colleagues involved in the day included organizer and parish nurse Diane Tieman, and therapist Nancy Dolan (seen pictured here) and several others. What an elevating day it was!
